Chromates

Chromates are designed to provide a barrier between a metal substrate and the corrosive environment.  The level of protection depends primarily on the formulation of the chromate solution.  The more highly formulated, the greater the protection and often the greater the cost.  Corrosion Resistance is frequently measured in Salt Spray Hours; the time it takes 5% of a significant surface to corrode.
